Junior Class Representative

Understanding one's strengths and working to maximize them is a sign of an insightful leader. However, a good leader must also understand an important truth of their role---decisions have meaning. This was my greatest learning experience as I fulfilled the role of Junior Class Representative. There were many roles that the class representatives served, but two key aspects were involvement with the Honors Program Student Council and the faculty led Honors Council. Both of these roles greatly impacted my leadership abilities and mentality.

Empowerment

One responsibility of my role involved understanding the needs and concerns of all Juniors in the Honors Program. I had to go beyond my comfort zone and develop a personal, professional, and genuine relationship with my peers. During Student Council meetings we shared ideas and concerns, and it was the responsibility of the class representatives to bring them forth to the program's directors. This helped develop a greater understanding of leadership by fulfilling a crucial role---that of a subordinate. I witnessed first-hand the genuineness and respect that we students were given. Our concerns were addressed with the seriousness they deserved. Put simply, we felt empowered. Listened to. I made this philosophy of empowerment a part of my personal leadership style.
