President of Spanish Club

I knew from the beginning of my college career that I wanted to strive for success and continue to push my boundaries. That is why during my second semester I decided to run for president of the Spanish Club. Here I began to search for and discover my personal leadership style. This occurred through much trial and error.

Learning to Lead

As an ambitious new president I was full of ideas and dreams for the direction of the club. However, I realized that effective leadership required more than just spirit. It was not only a matter of how prepared I was or what qualities I possessed, but how I could contribute to the development of others and the overall success of the club. For better or worse, all our experiences needed to be taken into consideration. Our differences needed to be reflected as what they were—strengths. During my second year as president this became more evident than ever as the new vice president was a very creative individual. Her background in education proved very useful for finding creative activities for the club. Before I had any understanding into leadership theory, I realized that allowing the unique talents of other individuals to shine strengthened our club. I found that I relied more on my own personal strengths and discovered new ways to integrate them. Soon enough I would be learning about strengths based leadership in my introductory Honors course.
